The new airline served 50 cities including 22 cities in Texas and New Mexico, part of Pioneer’s route network, under legendary president Robert Six and Vice President Harding Lawrence, who would later play a transformative role as President of Braniff International. New York Central 20th Century Limited SchedulesįIRST NON-STOP COAST-TO-COAST COMMERCIAL AIRLINE SERVICE Prolific industrial designers were behind both sets - Henry Dreyfuss for the 20 th Century Limited, and Raymond Loewy with the Broadway Limited. The railroads were so competitive, in fact, they both introduced new streamlined Art Deco train sets on the same day: June 15, 1938. The New York Central and Pennsylvania Railroads had long been competitors, connecting the East Coast and the Midwest with routes that included flagship service on the NYC’s 20 th Century Limited and the PRR’s Broadway Limited, with both named trains dating back to the early 20 th century and catering to upper-class travelers. JUNE 15, 1938: THE DEBUT OF TWO LEGENDARY STREAMLINERS Objects from our collection reveal impactful moments like the first non-stop coast-to-coast airline service, the beginnings of Amtrak, and the first service on the Skokie Swift, today’s CTA Yellow Line. Materials from five collections appear in the exhibit, preserved by collectors who saw the value of these ephemeral documents to transportation history: George M. The Transportation Library is proud to debut a new exhibit: Timetable Firsts: Significant Moments in 20th Century Transportation History Illustrated Through Timetables in the Collections of the Transportation Library is now on display in our fifth floor lobby in University Library. Freely available for travelers to collect at railroad stations, airports, and travel agencies around the world, they were widely-distributed canvases for companies to communicate a corporate identity, promote a new destination, or to introduce the launch of a new streamlined locomotive, a new aircraft – even the beginning of the jet age. However, timetables were also promotional materials. ![]() ![]() Once they were no longer useful, most timetables were discarded. The primary purpose of a timetable was to provide passengers with schedules, route maps, and other information for planning their travels. Airline and railroad schedules were regularly updated, and with the release of a new timetable, the previous edition was rendered obsolete. Printed timetables were, by definition, ephemeral.

Knowing your brain is biased is critical to making it work better for you, and everyone around you. For example, physicians can learn to recognize cognitive biases and so reduce their diagnostic mistakes.īut even with effort, none of us will escape cognitive errors altogether. Studies show that some errors in thinking can be moderated with education. People are influenced in differing degrees by these (and many other) cognitive biases. There is also the cognitive error of overgeneralization, which is the tendency to jump to a broad conclusion based on a single piece of evidence. People with high social security numbers paid up to 346 percent more than those with low numbers. The anchoring effect is another bias in thinking whereby people’s initial focus on a particular fact or number means that they fail to properly adjust their judgments as new and different information arises. Sure enough, the anchoring effect scrambled their ability to judge the value of the items. ![]() Likewise, physicians (and everyone else) must watch out for confirmation bias, which is the tendency people have to process new information in a way that is heavily influenced by their existing beliefs. There are some truly stunning environments and the animations are highly detailed and buttery smooth. I also think it’s worth saying that this is up there with some of the best-looking pixel art graphics I’ve seen in a game. My first impressions were good rather than the usual roguelike approach of immediately throwing you naked into the woods with a stick, Children of Morta presents you with a decently paced prologue/tutorial that takes you through the kinds of enemies, abilities and items you might come across in the levels. As you explore dungeons, you come across items that grant you temporary stat boosts, new attacks or buffs that last until you die or complete the level. The characters level up as you play them, unlocking unique abilities as well as bonuses that apply across all members of the family. Each member of the Bergson family has their own distinct playstyle: John, the father of the family, uses a sword and shield the youngest son Kevin dual-wields daggers – and so on. Gameplay is pretty standard top-down hack ‘n’ slash type business, reminding me of Diablo but a bit less boring. ![]() ![]() It does such a good job of establishing the Bergson house as a safe and protective sanctuary, that when we hit the second act and the corruption begins to creep into their home, it’s that much more effective. Having said that, I will admit this works to the game’s advantage later on. They all talk about the thing as if it’s a desperately urgent matter, but then they seem quite content to sit around at home puffing on a pipe or playing the violin. There is some sort of evil corrupting entity spreading across the land, but nobody fully explains what the stakes are or what would happen if they fail to rescue the spirits of Rea and defeat it. The Bergsons serve as the guardians of Mount Morta, but why the mountain actually needs guardians is left pretty vague. I’m not kidding, I’m pretty sure this is the first epic high fantasy adventure in which I’ve played characters named Mark, Linda or Kevin. In Children of Morta you follow the Bergsons, an extraordinary family who all have comically average first names. Maybe he dreamed of one day becoming part of a fashion blogger’s twitter handle, who knows? I mean, we never got any kind of backstory for Rogue‘s main character. For one thing, Children of Morta places a strong emphasis on its narrative, centred around the interpersonal relationships of a family of warriors who have stood guard over the mystical Mount Morta for generations. Though I’ve labelled it as a roguelike, I’m not sure how much you could claim Children of Morta has in common with the original Rogue, an ASCII game in which the protagonist was literally an symbol. Perhaps it’s just because a lot of people like them, but I suspect it’s mainly because randomly generating your whole game is cheaper and easier than hiring a level designer.Ĭhildren of Morta is a roguelike top-down hack ‘n’ slash RPG, developed by Dead Mage and published by 11 Bit Studios. ![]() You’ve got roguelike space shoot-em-ups, roguelike first person shooters, even roguelike rhythm games. But both Planet Coaster and RollerCoaster Tycoon World have bigger studios behind them, Frontier who are fresh off Elite Dangerous and Atari who have persuaded Nvizzo Creations to make their game, who I’d assume don’t have as much experience in the genre, which could explain the longer development cycle. That’s nothing major to be honest, both Parkitect and Theme Park Studio are being made by smaller studios, Texel Raptor and Pantera Entertainment respectively. I won’t go on about them too much as they’re all in an Early Access state (although Rollercoaster Tycoon World has suddenly been ‘released’), but it is interesting to note that Planet Coaster was the last game to be announced and the first game to be released from the bunch. I admit I may have a theme park building problem, though it gives me the ability to compare all these games. We’ve seen Theme Park Studio, Rollercoaster Tycoon World and Parkitect all enter Early Access on Steam, although the quality of these early titles leaves much to be desired (Parkitect excluded). But in the past few years, this sub-genre of the building management game has undergone something of a renaissance.
